Anywhere Board Games

Anywhere Board Games (ABG) allows users to play board and card games on the Web in real time on multiple machines (PC, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android). Unlike other gaming environments, this one has a peculiar vision: projecting the main board on our table and using laptops or tablets to control players' hands (with other friends joining in remotely). It requires a PHP 5 server. While it is in beta (frequent updates), it supports flipping, stacking, rotating, rolling, and shuffling of pieces, so most board and card games are playable.

Release Notes: This release makes manipulating pieces easier with a mouse: the left button for moving, the middle button for flipping, and the right button for rotating a piece.

Release Notes: While the authors still prefer the speed of Google Chrome on Android, with a little bit of tweaking, this release works pretty well on the default Android browser (fixing an issue with piece and screen flashing). This release also adds a confirmation dialog to make sure you really want to clear the board.

Release Notes: This release brings a consistent feel and better stability on touch devices (iOS and Android). Touch-drag events now initiate multi-selection of board pieces (just like using the mouse). To pan and zoom with touches, first bring up a pop-up menu (by clicking on a piece or on the background). To make staking decks easier, pieces are now stacked at the location of the lowest piece. Finally, we some testing was done on Google Chrome beta for Android, and it works very well. So Google Chrome, Safari (iOS), and Firefox are suggested for use with ABG.

Release Notes: Users can now play Agricola Express without a paper and pencil. This release uses the new "attach HTML to a piece" feature to allow users to interact with check boxes and text boxes on the score card.

Release Notes: This release adds Agricola Express (a dice game under the Creative Commons License), 3-D die renderings (with POV-Ray source), and the ability to attach custom HTML to pieces (to lay the groundwork for links and scripting).

Why review my own software? To be fair and open. Right now (as of 2/29/2012) ABG takes a bit of technical knowledge to install (the Windows installer provides Apache and PHP, but you have configure your firewall to get multiple players going) and once up takes a bit of leg work (gathering and importing images from the web) to get your own game going. However, I was able to get a good game of Settlers of Catan in and a bunch of games of the Pokemon TCG starter set with my 8 year old. So I achieved my initial goal: to be able to remotely play games with my father who lives pretty far away. I hope to continue to expand the project to make it more useful for the general public.
